Men and the Australian public may lose out due to the APS promoting inadequate mental health treatment pathways in Australia.
A recent study released by Beyond Blue yesterday has found that the rate of male suicide may be worse than previously thought. The study, believed to be a world first, investigated data from ambulance call-outs. The number of Ambulance call outs for reasons related to mental health were triple when compared with data collected from Emergency departments.
On Monday 3rd June 2019, the APS white paper, discussing the reforms to the Medicare Better Access to Mental Health Scheme, will be released. It may be possible that the APS will advocate to continue to reduce the community’s access to the majority of Australian psychologists. This is due to their ongoing and unjustified distinction between clinically endorsed and all other psychologists.
The recent Beyond Blue study has highlighted an urgent need for mental health treatment reforms. It has suggested that the focus of reform be on providing better continuity of care and more services to support the staggering numbers suffering from mental health issues.
Is this really the time to reduce men’s and the wider community’s access to Australian psychologists?
We don’t think so.
RAPS Team has read so many powerful letters of resignation from the APS.
We urge everyone who has written to the APS, to email your letters of resignation to all directors and ask for your letter to be tabled at the next board meeting. Without this we can’t be sure if anyone gets to read them.
We want as many APS directors to read your passionate letters.
